Starter Website Hosting Plan Details

Great for a start-up site that has a fair amount of content and/or traffic.

All our website hosting plans can be scaled up or down at any time: you can order this one now, then as you outgrow it, upgrade to a bigger plan. Compare all plans side-by-side to see how this one measures up.

Tip: roll over a feature to see its description

Disk Space
The amount of space available for uploading content and storing email. Disk space can be upgraded a la carte, or increased by upgrading to a new package.
Data Transfer
The amount of transfer available to an account for all account-related traffic, including web, FTP, and email transfer.
Sub Domains
Subdomains allow segregation of content within a site. A photographer, for instance, may have photos.theirdomain.com under theirdomain.com. Regular subdomains permit viewing of content at sub.domain.com as well as domain.com/sub/. Subdomains used for the purposes of addon domains are visible by the addon domain name or via www.sub.domain.com (see the addon domain function).
FTP Accounts
The number of additional FTP accounts beyond the master username account available on each package. Additional FTP accounts permit site holders to restrict access for other users to specific areas of the site. Both standard FTP and SecureFTP are available.
MySQL Databases
The number of MySQL databases available on each package. MySQL is a powerful open source database most often used in conjunction with the php programming language. Databases can be added or removed as needed right from the control panel for your account, without the need to submit a help desk request.
E-mail Addresses
The number of POP mailboxes available for each package. Only true POP mailboxes are counted toward this total - autoresponders, forwarders, and aliases are not included in this number.
Mailing Lists
The number of mailman mailing lists included in each package. Mailman is a complex (but simple to use) mailing list that supports confirmed opt-in procedures as required by legitimate mailings. The lists can hold tens of thousands of addresses with no issues. Certain lists may require that mailings be done after US business hours so as not to unduly impact other clients while the list runs; this restriction is not generally necessary for most lists, which are typically not very large.
Addon Domains
True multi-domain capable hosting! This figure represents the number of addon (also known as pointed) domains available on each package. An addon or pointed domain is one that pulls content from a subfolder of an account rather than the top level web folder. This permits clients to set up domain2.com under domain1.com without visitors knowing domain2.com is not a standalone account. Addon domains have their own email functionality, and share the resources of the master account. Addon domains can be created or removed right from the control panel.

Control Panel
The main interface to account-related activities, the control panel offers clients the freedom to manage their own site and resources without the need to contact support. Create mailboxes, databases, or entire web pages, install scripts, set up addon domains or cron jobs, check your webmail, and more, all from a single interface. Our control panel also has handy links to the support area (where you can find the knowledgebase and helpdesk), the community forums (where you can find other clients), and to the billing system (for updates and reviews of your account and packages). Everything you need for total control of your account is a mouse click away.
Cron Job Manager
Cron jobs permit the automated running of an account- or site-related function. Many times, cron jobs are set to execute a script for an account; other example uses would be an automated backup of a mySQL database, or a clearing of email marked as spam. If you have a job you'd like to run automatically at a specified time, cron jobs will permit you to do that. Notifications of completed cron jobs can be emailed or discarded, at your preference. Cron jobs can be set up (or removed) directly via the control panel, using a simple or advanced interface.
Apache Handler Manager
An apache "handler" is used to define what apache will do with a specific type of file when that file is called. Most file types (such as .htm(l) or .cgi files) have implicit handlers and do not require any setup on the part of the client. From time to time, however, clients may need to define a different action to be taken for a particular file type under their account. Handlers can be set up right from the control panel.
Custom Error Pages
With custom error pages, visitors can be shown a page of your own making rather than the nondescriptive errors most browsers give. Customize any or all of the available error page types, including 404 (not found), 403 (forbidden), and 501 (authorization required - see also password protected directories). Error pages can be customized via the control panel interface, or defined manually for an entire account or specific folders (see also .htacess).
File Manager
The file manager permits clients to create, edit, upload, and delete files and folders right from the control panel interface. FTP access is also available (see also FTP Accounts).
FrontPage Extensions
Microsoft Frontpage extensions can be installed or uninstalled as needed from the control panel. Frontpage extensions allow clients to utilize the publish function within Frontpage to send their data to their account.
.htaccess
The use of a .htaccess file under an account can provide anything from directives for customized error pages to denying access from remote locations to any part of a site to prohibiting hotlinking to images on an account and more. Clients can use .htaccess files at their discretion anywhere under their accounts.
SSH
Shell access is available on request for supported packages. SSH (for Secure SHell) permits command-line level functionality for account holders. While most people will never need SSH access, we do recognize that some people, especially developers, often find it useful. Regular telnet access is not available for security reasons.
IP Deny Manager
The IP Deny Manager allows clients to easily block remote IPs from accessing their site. The interface is available right from the control panel and the listing can be adjusted at any time as needed by the demands of the site.
Password Protected Directories
Password protected directories allow clients to restrict access to portions of their site based on a username and password supplied by a visitor. The setup of any usernames and passwords can be done via the interface in the control panel, and usernames can be removed at any time if access is to be revoked.
Autoresponders
Autoresponders permit messages to be generated in response to email to specific addresses under an account. Often used in business for contacts or for vacation messages under personal accounts, autoresponders can be created or removed right from the control panel under the mail management area.
E-mail Aliases
Aliases are email addresses that are not connected to an actual created mailbox (POP mailbox) under an account. Aliases permit clients to use any address at their domain as a valid address. The default username on an account also acts as the "catchall" account, and will collect any email to aliases at a domain.
E-mail Forwarding
Forwarding permits the automated relay of any email address at a domain to any other email address, either at the same domain or elsewhere. Forwarders can be defined or removed right from the control panel interface in the mail management area.
Spam Filtering
Server-level spam filtering is enabled to combat the ever-increasing rise of junk email that everyone with a mailbox will recognize. The primary list in use is that from Spamhaus. In addition, client-level spam filtering (via the client-configurable SpamAssassin) is also available to assist clients even further in keeping their inboxes clean.
E-mail Virus Scanning
Scanning is performed at the server level to intercept virus-infected email before it reaches client mailboxes.
Webmail
Three different webmail clients are offered so clients can choose the one that suits them best. Horde, Squirrelmail, and Neomail are all available from within the control panel. In addition, webmail is also available as a direct link, without the need to log into the control panel, making webmail suitable for mail users under an account who do not need access to the control panel itself. The direct webmail logins also permit users to change their email passwords, taking the burden for updates off the shoulders of the account holder.
Raw Log Files
Raw log files showing the web traffic to an account are available for download from the control panel. These are the same logs used by the statistics programs to generate data. Logs are rotated automatically at the end of each month, or can be saved to the client's account using the Log Manager function.
Webalizer
Webalizer is an open source log analysis program that creates a variety of graphs and charts detailing visits to a web site. This is one of the stats programs available via the control panel interface.
AWStats
AWStats is a free, open source log analyzer that produces graphical statistics for a site. This is one of the statistics programs available from the control panel interface.
Analog
Analog is a lightweight statistics program that will detail traffic to a site. This is one of the statistics programs available from the control panel interface.
Sub Domains Statistics
The same statics programs that are available to detail traffic to the main web site are also available for subdomains of that web site. Subdomain statistics permit clients to view analysis related only to a subdomain rather than to the site as a whole. This is useful for clients who have a need to separately track usage. Subdomain statistics are available via the control panel.
Log Manager
The log manager permits clients to retain their raw access logs at the end of each month. Logs can be rotated monthly from the client's directly, or retained and removed manually. Archived logs, if retention is enabled, will be available for download via the log manager or via FTP.
Error Logs
Error logs permit clients to view any errors related to their site operation. Most often, error logs are used in conjunction with script troubleshooting to determine the problematic area, and are also used to determine requests for pages that do not exist, or requests that are denied to the visitor for any reason (see also: .htaccess, IP Deny Manager, or Hotlink Protection items).
Perl
Perl is a versatile, extensible, cross-platform programming language which can be used for a wide variety of purposes.
SSI - Server Side Includes
Server side includes (SSI) are directives placed within web pages. These directives, as the name implies, are evaluated by the server when the page that includes them is called. This permits the addition of dynamic content to a web page (such as a header that may change frequently, for instance) without requiring that the entire page be updated.
MySQL
MySQL is a powerful open source database most often used in conjunction with the PHP programming language, such as for forums, and offers a multi-threaded, multi-user environment.
PHP
PHP is a widely used scripting language often used in web development. PHP code is parsed on the server side, and is not dependent on the browser a visitor to a site may be using.
Zend Optimizer
The Zend Optimizer is required to run files encoded by the Zend Encoder. By default, Zend Optimizer is installed on every server for the convenience of our clients.
